We are first and foremost the biggest pet lovers around. We currently have a wide variety of pets including: 2 cats, a long-haired guinea pig (RIP Kitten), a Netherland dwarf rabbit, 2 leopard geckos, and several snakes. The chinchillas are fun and exciting project for us, but they are also members of the family. In addition to the chinchillas we breed ball python morphs as well. Please see the link below if you'd like more information. (And no, we do not breed the chinchillas or any of our other pets to feed the snakes.)
Of all the pets that we have owned, chinchillas have to be the most fascinating. We affectionately call them our little monkeys because… well, they act like them. They are always climbing, leaping, and exploring. And let’s not forget the occasional tug-of-war that they enjoy playing with us when they steal something. They are amazing little creatures.
A Family – Separated and Reunited Again
Our first chinchilla that we purchased was Star, our pink white female. We have always wanted a chin but for one reason or another it was always put on the back burner. We saw a few cute ones in various pet stores from time to time but the employees were always afraid to reach into the cage. We knew that what you see is what you get with those little guys and we already had an experience similar to that with a hamster of ours. We wanted to be able to play with the chinchilla rather than worry that we may lose a finger at any minute.
Then the day came when we met Star. We actually met Star, Dustie, and Bounce that day, but we didn’t think we could handle three when we didn’t even know what having one chin was like. A family had owned Star and Dustie along with their son (Bounce) and daughter (a White Silver). They played with them every night for hours on end but sadly they had to move and could not take their furry family members with them. Because of previous experiences with chinchillas we assumed that Star and her family were like all of the other cute chins that we saw. When we asked if they were friendly we were surprised when the answer was an astounding “Yes!!!” We held Star and Bounce that day and played with them for about an hour. They were having the time of their lives as they climbed on new people. Dustie (a standard gray) was a little shy and stayed in his house the whole time. We had finally found friendly chinchillas when we weren’t expecting to find them. It was a tough decision to pick between the three but we ultimately chose Star. We didn’t get to play with Dustie, and Bounce (also a pink white) was more hyper than Star. We thought we’d get the tamer one since we were still had some trepidation about owning a chinchilla.
We obviously became much more confident in our ability to own a chinchilla when we went back two weeks later to see if Dustie was still available. Both Dustie and Bounce were still there. We played with Dustie and he was the sweetest thing ever. He’s truly a gentle giant. We brought him home and reunited him with Star. It was like an episode of Oprah. They were snuggling, kissing, and making a ton of noises at each other. It was if they were catching up on the past two weeks. Star and Dustie bonded again instantly and they’re still inseparable. They can always be found snuggling together on their perch or playing a game of hide and go seek.
A couple of weeks after we brought Dustie home we were curious if anyone had purchased Bounce yet. We went back and he was all by himself. We had so much fun with Star and Dustie that we decided to bring him home as well. He gave his mom and dad kisses through the bars of their cage, and then got his very own castle. If you’d had told us that first day that we would own all three of those chinchillas we wouldn’t have believed you! But here we are, and we love them all! We are so happy that we could reunite the whole family (well besides the daughter but we never had the chance to meet her). The newest additions to the family are Star and Dustie's grandson, Milo, and most recently a pink white granddaughter and a beige grandson!
Present Day
- Dustie [Standard Gray] and Star [Het Pink White] are currently paired together and we are eagerly awaiting the arrival of their third litter together.
- Bounce [Het Pink White male] is currently living with Pounce [Black Velvet female] (from Chins of Paradise) They are such snuggle chinnies! They are proud parents of Milo [Black Velvet male] born to us here on 10/24/06, and Cupid [Beige female] born to us here on 2/14/07. Unfortunately, Cupid passed away on 6/2/07... however her siblings were born on the same day! A healthy pink white female (Pogo) and het beige male were born! (Another beige was born at the same time but was the runt of the litter and passed away the following day).
