Considering A Chin

Thinking of getting your first chinchilla?

Here are some things that you will need to consider.

I am not trying to talk you out of getting a chinchilla, nor am I trying to talk you into getting one. That is a decision that is yours to make. This is simply a guide that may help you decide if a chinchilla is a good pet choice for you. My priority is making sure that you are happy with your purchase, and making sure that the chinchilla is happy and healthy with their new owner. I want it to be a perfect match for both you and the chinchilla.

  • Temperature - Are you willing to keep at least a room or portion of your home at a constant 60-70 degrees F at ALL times?
Chinchillas need a constant temp of 60-70 degrees. This is NOT a "luxury" for a chin. If they are in temps over 75 degrees they can and will die even in a matter of minutes. A common way to ensure the chin is cool is to have a small A/C in the window of the room that the chin is in (they can be found at most home improvement centers and other stores). Make sure that the temp is always monitored and that it never gets above 75 degrees F.

  • Time - Playing with the chin, cleaning the cage weekly, changing the water nightly, feeding nightly, and giving a dust bath 2-3 times a week all take time. Make sure that you have the time to devote to them on a daily basis.

  • Money for supplies - Pellets, hay, bedding, and dust are the common things that you will have to purchase frequently. Also, replacing chewed water bottles, toys, shelving, and cages are not as frequent but are still inevitable expenses.

  • Vet - If your chin becomes ill it may need immediate vet care. You will need to have an exotics vet in your area (many vets only deal with cats and dogs so you will need to find an exotics vet ahead of time). Typically, a trip to an exotics vet with your chin will be more expensive than a trip to a regular vet with a cat or dog.

This is NOT a comprehensive list of how to care for a chinchilla. This is only intended as a checklist if you are considering a chinchilla. Please check out my Chin Care page for additional information and do a lot of research before making a final decision.
